NEA Big Read: Home

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

The Events, The Book & The Author

Welcome to Greater Poughkeepsie's tenth community-wide literacy program for 2016. The Poughkeepsie Public Library District is pleased to partner with other public libraries, school districts, colleges, and many civic, arts and educational organizations in this effort, and is grateful to our local business and foundation sponsors for their critical support. From October 14 through November 19, a remarkable array of events, film screenings, book discussions, and creative endeavors will unfold across the region, all prompted by Luis Alberto Urrea's novel, Into the Beautiful North.

About Luis Urrea

"No one writes more tragically or intimately about border culture than this son of a Mexican father and Anglo mother," journalist Bill Moyers said of Luis Alberto Urrea, author of numerous works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. In his third novel, Into the Beautiful North, Urrea transcends the "us against them" discourse of immigration and writes with compassion and humor about the people and places caught up in the border wars. Urrea invites us to think of the border as more than a stark divide between nations: he reminds us that it is a place of convergence where meaningful conversations, and even love, between cultures begins.

Meet the Author

Saturday, October 29, 2:30

Luis Alberto Urrea will be in the Poughkeepsie area for two days, visiting schools on October 28, and speaking to the public at the Boardman Road Branch Library on Saturday afternoon, October 29. As a writer, Urrea seems as comfortable writing poetry and non-fiction as he is writing fiction. As a speaker, he draws on family lore and personal experience to engage and delight audiences. Luis now lives in Chicago and teaches creative writing, but he also loves speaking to Big Read communities about his work. Don't miss this unique chance to meet the author in person!
